Dr. Wiesam Essa – GDC's director holds a
meeting with World Food Program (WFP) representatives. Mr. Keith Ursel (Director of the Gaza office) hosted
the meeting at the WFP headquarter in Gaza City (UNDP building). Mr. George
Muammar (Information Management and Knowledge Coordinator at WFP in West Bank) and
Mr. Benjamin KORFF (WFP
Jerusalem Office) attends
the meetings from Jerusalem through the videoconference.
Dr. Essa expressed the GDC's appreciation for the invitation for the meeting, Dr. Essa briefly discussed the GDC's objectives and discussed the strategic and the action plans for the following years in the field of agriculture and food security in Gaza Strip. Dr. Essa discussed ideas of important project proposals that can be achieved with partners such as WFP based on the integrations of geospatial technology and spatial data in agriculture and food security research and development.
Mr. Muammar briefly presented the WFP's achievements that uses geospatial technology in the field of food security and agriculture, both at global level and in parts of the Palestinian National Authority. He indicated the determinants to be adopted by WFP in its projects within PNA areas. Mr. George discussed how closely WFP's objectives is related to GDC's objectives. Mr. Ursel and Mr. Muammar recommended the ways of cooperation and the determinants for future joint projects, they stressed that the GDC's message is important in terms of the space limitation of the Gaza Strip and the Urban sprawl, they also expressed the importance of spatial data collection for many of those interested in food and agricultural security studies for the education, research, and development.
The meeting was in the context of reviewing activities of exploring new ideas of potential cooperation for the GDC and WFP in research and development, within the activity domain of GDC's Unit of Health and Food Security Studies.
